Emergency veterinarian,
when your animal needs urgent help
Rapid assessment of illness and injuries
Are you concerned about your animal and unsure how quickly it needs to be examined?
At Vestjyske Dyrlæger, you can get help from an emergency veterinarian if your dog, cat, or an animal in your herd suddenly becomes ill or is injured. From our clinic in Nørre Nebel, we assist local animal owners, farms, and holiday visitors from, among other places, Skjern, Varde, and the surrounding areas. When you call, you will be put in touch with a veterinarian, who will help assess the situation.
The clinic is open on weekdays from 7:00 to 17:00, and consultations are by appointment. If you need emergency veterinary assistance, the phone line is always open.
Symptoms that may require urgent help
Some symptoms and injuries require prompt examination. It can be difficult to assess how serious the situation is yourself, so you should call if your animal appears clearly affected or suddenly changes its behaviour.
Contact an emergency veterinarian, for example, if your animal has:
- Breathing difficulties, seizures, collapse, or altered consciousness
- Severe bleeding, serious wounds, traffic accidents, or other major injuries
- Suspected poisoning, acute abdominal bloating, or difficulty urinating
Repeated vomiting, severe diarrhoea, birthing difficulties, or a markedly reduced general condition may also require urgent help. This list is not exhaustive. Therefore, call us if you are unsure whether your animal should be examined immediately.
How we help in cases of acute illness and injury
When you contact us, we will ask about the animal’s symptoms, general condition, and any injuries. Based on your information, we will assess how quickly the animal needs to be seen and what you should do before you arrive.
At our small animal clinic, we have modern facilities for examining and treating dogs and cats. The specific treatment depends on the animal’s condition. The first goal is to gain an overview of the situation and stabilise the animal if necessary.
It is helpful if you can tell us:
- When the symptoms or injury occurred
- How the animal’s condition has developed
- Whether the animal has eaten medication, plants, chemicals, or other objects
If poisoning is suspected, you should bring the packaging or take a photo of the product the animal may have ingested. Do not try to induce vomiting yourself unless a veterinarian has specifically instructed you to do so.
Emergency help outside opening hours
If your animal needs urgent help outside the clinic’s normal opening hours, you should still call our regular phone number. We are part of an on-call arrangement, so an emergency veterinarian can help assess the situation and advise you on the next steps.
Online booking should not be used for urgent problems, as the enquiry must be assessed immediately. Always call if your animal suddenly becomes seriously ill or is injured.
Emergency visits in our farm practice
Our mobile farm practice also handles emergency visits in herds. On weekdays, emergency visits should, as far as possible, be called in between 7:00 and 9:00. This makes it easier to plan the day’s route and ensure the animals are seen as quickly as possible.
Emergency call-outs in our farm practice that are called in after 9:00 will incur a surcharge. Outside normal opening hours, you can get help through the on-call arrangement.
