Gentle dog teeth cleaning with a focus on dental care
Take good care of your dog’s teeth
Does your dog have bad breath, visible plaque, or difficulty chewing?
At Vestjyske Dyrlæger, you can receive professional dog teeth cleaning and advice from an experienced veterinarian. The treatment takes place at our clinic in Nørre Nebel, where we welcome dogs from, among other places, Skjern, Varde, and the surrounding areas.
A dog needs regular dental care in the same way as humans do. Toothbrushing, check-ups, and professional cleaning can help prevent tartar, inflammation, and other painful dental problems in dogs.
Preventive dental care for dogs
It is usually easier to prevent problems than to treat them once they have become extensive. A preventive dental check-up makes it possible to detect changes in the teeth and oral cavity before they cause clear symptoms.
Many conditions in the mouth can be difficult to see in an awake dog. A thorough examination may therefore require the dog to be sedated. In some cases, it may also be necessary to take X-rays to examine the tooth roots and the parts of the teeth that are not visible.
At our small animal clinic, we can assess your dog’s teeth and advise you on the appropriate dental treatment.
The need depends on the dog
How often a dog needs teeth cleaning depends, among other things, on its size, age, tooth alignment, and oral hygiene. Some dogs quickly develop tartar, while others need professional cleaning at longer intervals.
Small dogs often have an increased risk of periodontal disease, and serious dental problems can occur already at a young age. It may therefore be relevant to have your dog’s teeth examined annually from around one year of age.
Larger dogs can also develop periodontal disease, but they may also experience broken or damaged teeth. It may be relevant to have the first thorough dental examination carried out no later than when the dog is around two years old. After that, teeth cleaning for your dog may be necessary every year or every other year.
These intervals are indicative. The specific need must always be assessed based on the individual dog.
Signs of dental problems in dogs
Dogs do not always show clearly that they have tooth pain. Therefore, it is important to watch for changes in your dog’s behaviour and eating habits.
Signs of dental problems may include:
- Bad breath, red gums, or visible tartar
- Difficulty chewing or reduced appetite
- Drooling, loose teeth, or changed behaviour
Over time, tartar in dogs can irritate the gums and increase the risk of inflammation and periodontal disease. If you notice one or more of the signs, your dog’s teeth should be examined.
An annual health check in connection with, for example, dog vaccination is also a good opportunity to have the teeth and oral cavity assessed.
Toothbrushing and oral hygiene at home
Regular toothbrushing is an important part of daily dental care for dogs. The best result is usually achieved by brushing your dog’s teeth every day with a toothbrush and toothpaste intended for dogs.
It can be an advantage to get your dog used to toothbrushing gradually. Start gently and let your dog become familiar with you touching its mouth and teeth. Good oral hygiene in dogs can reduce the build-up of plaque, but it does not necessarily replace a professional examination or dental treatment.

FAQ about dog teeth cleaning
How is dog teeth cleaning carried out?
Dog teeth cleaning is carried out under sedation so that the teeth and oral cavity can be examined thoroughly. If hidden dental problems are suspected, it may be relevant to take X-rays.
How often should a dog have its teeth cleaned?
The frequency depends on the dog’s size, age, and dental health. Small dogs may need an annual teeth cleaning, while larger dogs often have their teeth cleaned every year or every other year.
How do you know if your dog needs teeth cleaning?
Bad breath, tartar, red gums, drooling, and difficulty chewing can be signs that the dog needs teeth cleaning. However, some problems cause no clear symptoms and are only discovered during a dental check-up.
Does the dog need to be sedated during teeth cleaning?
A thorough teeth cleaning for your dog is carried out under sedation. This makes it possible to examine and clean the teeth properly, while the dog remains calm during the treatment.
Can tartar be prevented at home?
Daily toothbrushing can reduce the build-up of plaque and tartar. Always use toothpaste intended for dogs, as regular human toothpaste is not suitable.
How much does dog teeth cleaning cost?
Dog teeth cleaning with ultrasound starts from DKK 2,595, but the price depends on the dog’s dental health, weight, and the extent of the treatment. The need for tooth extraction or other dental treatment may affect the total cost. Read more about our prices here.
