The Adder
The adder is Denmark’s only venomous snake. It is particularly common in the dunes of West Jutland and on heathland areas. On warm, sunny days in spring and summer, the adder is often found in open, sunny places.
The adder, which can grow up to 80 cm long, is grey or brown and has a dark zigzag stripe along its back.
Adders only attack when they feel threatened. However, due to dogs’ curious behaviour, adder bites are not uncommon. Adders lie in the spring sun to warm up, but they are sluggish and slow as long as the night-time temperature is low.
Adder bites are only exceptionally life-threatening – but always very unpleasant. If your dog develops a sore, rapidly growing swelling on the face or on a paw, it is therefore recommended that you contact the nearest veterinarian as soon as possible.
